Milwaukee Bucks Must Avoid Offensive Droughts To Win Games
Rick Osentoski-US PRESSWIRE

The theme of the Milwaukee Bucks this season seems to be starting games out fast but then hitting an offensive plateau at some point during the contest.

Every team goes through offensive droughts but the Bucks have done it in almost every game this season. They will go anywhere between four and eight minutes without scoring a single point. During this time frame the players will either make ridiculous passes in an attempt to gain a fast break or take low-percentage jumpers that seem to never go in.

Last night is a great example of this. Against the Phoenix Suns the Bucks had a two-point lead with 6:07 left in the first quarter. Milwaukee did not score again until the 2:55 mark where Phoenix had already taken a six-point lead. In the first five minutes of the second quarter the Bucks were only able to score six-points.  The Suns were then able to go on a 19-8 run over the final six minutes to take a 17-point lead into halftime.

Milwaukee is capable of scoring but it seems that instead of making multiple passes to set up a good looking shot, they have certain players who attempt a difficult jumper because they feel they can make it. It then turns into a vicious cycle where everyone on the team goes cold at the same time and even the easiest layups do not drop in. Meanwhile, the Bucks have to rely on the defense but since everyone is so frustrated on the offensive side of the court they are not running back in time to stop the opposing team from getting fast break points.

The Bucks have an outstanding, aggressive defense that can deny even the most talented NBA players, but without a good offense they will not be able to compete with the elite teams on a nightly basis. Milwaukee has shown signs of putting together a great performance as they have defeated contenders such as the Miami Heat (twice), Los Angeles Lakers and San Antonio Spurs. If the Bucks could only figure out a way to harness this ability and display it every time they take the court they will be virtually unbeatable.

Milwaukee is currently eighth in the Eastern Conference with a 10-14 record. They will be taking on the (8-18) Raptors tonight in Toronto.
