Dwight Howard to LA Could Be Done If Lakers Are Willing
Jeff Hanisch-US Presswire

With Dwight Howard still asking for a trade away from the Orlando and with disgruntled players in Los Angeles, a trade between the Magic and Lakers could be done if the Lakers are willing. Trade rumors have been swirling around the Staples Center and Pau Gasol seems to be the one most impacted by them.

Getting a fair deal for Dwight Howard is not likely. Howard is by far the best center in the NBA and one of the most dominant players in the history of the league. Though neither team would confirm nor deny it, it was rumored that the Magic were willing to trade Howard to LA for Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol. However, the rumor also said that the Lakers were not willing to trade Gasol. Now with Gasol unhappy with his name being associated with so many trade rumors, the Lakers might be willing to part ways with the all-star forward.

With Lakers players now publically upset with general manager Mitch Kupchak over all the different trade rumors swirling around the team, now could be the opportunity to make a deal. Dwight Howard won’t be traded by the Magic until after February 26 when Orlando hosts the all-star game but a deal can be reached as early as February 27. If the Lakers are willing to trade both Bynum and Gasol for Howard, the Magic likely will make that deal.

While that trade may seem to be a lot for the Lakers to give up for one player, it’s the only deal that comes close to fair for the Magic. Howard reportedly gave the Magic three teams that he would like to be dealt to. Those teams were the New Jersey Nets, Dallas Mavericks, and Los Angeles Lakers. While the Magic might be able to get better deals from other teams, a team will only trade for the star center if they can guarantee that he’ll sign an extension.

Original reports had the Nets offering center Brook Lopez and draft picks to the Magic for Howard. Unless at least one of those picks would be a number one overall, that trade comes nowhere close to even for the potential future hall of famer. Another problem with some of these trades are that the Magic are currently sitting in third in the Eastern Conference. If the Magic trade Howard to the Nets for Lopez and draft picks, the season is as good as over considering that Lopez is an average center and has been injured much of this season. Trading for Bynum and Gasol would keep the Magic as contenders in the East and possibly one of the favorites heading into the postseason.

It looks likely Howard may not even be on the move at all. Magic general manager Otis Smith’s job is currently in jeopardy due to poor trades over the past two seasons and now with the franchise player asking for a move. Smith’s last chance to keep his job is to convince Howard to stay with the Magic. The only other chance for Smith to keep his job would be for the Magic to trade for both Bynum and Gasol. With the Lakers unlikely to give up both of those players for Howard and maybe Hedo Turkoglu, Smith may take the risk of keeping Howard and hope he either changes his mind, or the Magic win the first championship in franchise history.

Still wouldn’t trade both Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum for Dwight Howard, if the Magic and everyone of you report writers think that the Nets’ offer centered around Brook Lopez is better, then the Lakers should have the Magics take that deal, the result of that deal I am afraid will be disastrous for both teams.

The Nets would have gutted their rosters for one player, and have nothing else but Dwight and D-Will, they will certainly drop out of the playoff this season because the Nets currently have too much games to make up for the playoffs.

Brook Lopez broke his foot, a center broking his foot will take a long time to recover, and the debut he had this season, he had a 3 efficiency rate, I am wondering how long will it take for him to recover. Plus, all those stats he had in the past few years was on a very bad team, and yet he couldn’t average double figure rebounds in a very bad team.

So if y’all think Nets’ deal is better, then have Magic take it, Lakers has other routes to take to make the team better.

  2. BTHBrooklyn12 says:

Broking?? What vocabulary that came from?

  3. Brian G says:

Here is a complicated 4 way deal that’s based on a few outside factors:

1.Sixers trade Brand, Thad Young, 1st round pick
    Sixers receive Pau Gasol

    2.Minnesota trades Beasley to Lakers
    Minny receives Thad Young

    3.Orlando trades Howard
Orlando receives Bynum, World Peace and Sixers first round pick

4.Lakers give up Bynum and World Peace
Lakers receive Howard, Brand and Beasley

Sixers get their PF and the ability to write off Nocioni’s deal next year, not to mention getting out from under Young’s deal to sign a SG next year

Lakers get rights to Howard in off-season with ability to write off Brand’s contract, which allows them ability to sign Howard and Beasley, or Howard and D Will

Wolves can finally get rid of Beasley and get Thad Young to add to their core

Orlando gets another good young center with ability to write off Hedo’s contract after the season (World Peace off the bench), not to mention a first round pick

One thing to remember is that Orlando and LA are getting hammered with the luxury tax. Additionally, Orlando isn’t in any position to dictate terms, especially with a guy who wants to be elsewhere.

  4. Tom says:

Not even worth mentioning. The Lakers can not, will not give up both Gasol and Bynum for Howard. Gasol for a decent guard is the more likely scenario.

  5. Josh says:

The Lakers aren’t willing to trade both Gasol and Bynum, and even if they are, the Magic would still be better off with the Nets’ deal because Lopez is returning from his first injury ever & Bynum has such a high injury risk. Also, Gasol is old & on the decline, so it wouldn’t be smart to build your team around a declining vet & a walking knee surgery. The Nets are also a younger team & with D-Will alongside him surrounded by a lot of young talent, the Nets would be a force to be reckoned with for a lot longer than a Lakers team which would essentially be just Kobe and Howard

  6. theVoiceOfReason says:

in what world is dwight howard one of the most dominant players of all time? hes not even one of the most dominant centers of all time, not even close. his name would hardly be known if he played in the days the nba actually had more than a couple talented centers. his offensive game has progressed very little over the years. sure he is an athletic freak and a great defender but he is no shaq or olajuwon, and clearly never will be.

the lakers will never trade pau and bynum for him and whatever crap turkey glue contract the magic screwed themselves on. the magic would make that trade tomorrow, not even thinking about the all star weekend. that would give them the best frontcourt in the game and any team would make that trade in a heartbeat, especially given the thought of losing him to fa.

teams execs are not dumb, and everyone knows the magic are not the ones with the upper hand in any negotiations. i would trade him for bynum due to bynums injury problems alone and orlando will not get a better player than bynum for what they will need. bynum, given the amount of touches he would get on that roster would prove to be the more talented offensive player that he is. dwight does some things real well but he is about the most overrated player in the last decade if not longer.

  7. Jarrettkrugel says:

Ok first of all he said he wont sign long term in LA despite he would be traded their http://www.lakersnation.com/lakers-rumors-dwight-howard-will-not-sign-an-extension-with-the-lakers/2012/02/03/

second the Nets aren’t just putting out Brook Lopez. The new trade is Marshon Brooks, Brook Lopez, Kris Humphries, and two lottery draft picks that are top 10 secure

  8. Ian says:

You’re high if you think Lakers would do that. No way in hell will Kupchak trade Bynum AND Gasol for Dwight. Bynum is playing at the same level as Dwight this year. Bynum and a 1st round pick is all ORL would get, and it’s still the best offer they would receive.
