The Dallas Cowboys are stuck with quarterback Tony Romo. No matter how many fans or members of the media encourage it, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones will not trade, release or bench Romo. Yes, I said the owner would make the call to bench Romo, not the Cowboys’ head coach, Jason Garrett. However, let’s take a look at a possible trade scenario that would instantly make the Cowboys a Super Bowl contender. Enter Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning.

Manning’s neck injury this season could be the best thing that’s happened to Dallas in nearly two decades. The Colts are in disarray; Manning hasn’t played a down this season and likely won’t, but he should be voted the league’s MVP.

Think about it; the Colts were a Super Bowl contender with Manning under center and now they can’t win a game. When the New England Patriots were without MVP quarterback Tom Brady in 2008, they still finished the year 11-5. Manning is truly the most valuable player to his team and would be for the Cowboys as well.

After thinking about that last statistic, it’s odd that the Colts would consider trading Manning, but that’s exactly what they’re doing. Neither Colts owner Jim Irsay nor team president Bill Polian has ruled it out. Plus, if the winless Colts obtain the first overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft, they could select Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck as the new face of the franchise.

That’s where the Cowboys come in. Jones could package Romo and the Cowboys’ 2012 first-round draft pick for Manning. Irsay already admitted his team is in a transition period, so what better way to jumpstart that with a new franchise quarterback in Luck and another first-round draft choice? Heck, the Cowboys could even throw in backup tight end Martellus Bennett to boot. It’s not like he’s valuable to the team, anyway.

Since the Colts are serious about moving on to post-Manning era, they would greatly benefit from this trade, but not as much as Dallas. Manning would make Cowboys receivers Miles Austin, Dez Bryant and Laurent Robinson into top 20 NFL receivers. That’s not even considering Cowboys tight end Jason Witten, who would become arguably the greatest tight end in NFL history with Manning throwing him the football.

Dallas has the talent to contend for a title right now. Romo is holding this team back and it’s high time we quit tiptoeing around that fact. Jones is too proud and stubborn to make this move, but it would make the Cowboys so much better.

Of course, this is all assuming Manning heals perfectly from his offseason neck surgeries. The NFL’s trade deadline for this season has past, so Manning’s debut as a Cowboy wouldn’t come until 2012. This would allow Manning more time to heal. He’s also four years older than Romo; a 35-year-old NFL quarterback isn’t exactly what you’d call a long-term investment. Still, this is about winning right now. The Cowboys wouldn’t make this move to enter a new era in team history.

If Manning could bring just one title to Dallas, the move would be considered a success. The Cowboys are already beginning to look into finding a quarterback for the future with Romo. That plan wouldn’t change with Manning. However, the upside of a very possible championship is the monumental difference in the two.

Again, this is a farfetched idea only because Jones doesn’t have the backbone to admit Romo isn’t the answer and pull the trigger on such a blockbuster deal. Dallas will never have the pleasure of seeing Manning in a Cowboys uniform, but the idea is enough to make you dig up your recordings of those 1990s Super Bowls. Think about it, Jerry; a sixth ring to tie the Pittsburgh Steelers for the most all time. C’mon man.

  1. righteo says:

    Getting rid of Romo…..good.

Taking Manning at this point in his career and health not to mention age….beyond stupid.

Missing out on Andy Dalton in the last draft…..brain dead stupid.

  2. Riley Schmitt says:

    What an insightful comment

  3. Chad says:

This is an interesting idea and far-fetched. One thing that you assume by writing the article is that the Colts might want Romo. The Cowboys would have to eat some money for the Colts to take him. The other thIng is that if Carson Palmer netted a first and a conditional first for the Bengals, Peyton Manning would net more than that. Now Romo, 2 first round picks, some money and maybe a 2nd round pick may do it. Sounds steep, but Manning is a game-changer

  4. Chris Ransom says:

Jerry Jones liked Cam Newton and I hear he likes Oklahoma’s Landry Jones. If Jones falls far enough I see Jerry Jones taking a flyer on Landry considering Cam’s success.
