Former Dallas Cowboys head coach Jimmy Johnson is finally responding to a shot taken at him by Cowboys owner Jerry Jones exactly one month ago. Johnson also gave some advice to current Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett regarding his recent blunder in a loss to the Arizona Cardinals in which he iced his own kicker. The never-ending saga continues…

When asked if he would hire an offensive coordinator to relieve Garrett of his play-calling duties, Jones declined the idea, calling Johnson and fellow former Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells “walk-around head coaches.” Johnson replied swiftly, referencing Garrett not liking the idea, either.

“He doesn’t like it because Jerry thinks he’s the walk-around head coach,” Johnson said.

So Jerry and Jimmy’s little squabble continues. As for Garrett’s late-game blooper, Johnson said he was “disappointed and kind of disgusted” at the timeout. Johnson elaborated on Garrett’s failure to call a timeout when the Cowboys got a first down at the Cardinals 35-yard line with 26 seconds left, saying it “really doesn’t make any sense at all.”

That last comment reflects the feelings of the majority of Cowboys Nation, who are also pretty disgusted about the call. Johnson said the two things Garrett and all NFL coaches always need to work on are game management and the use of timeouts.

“If you’ve coached, you’ve screwed it up at times — we all have — but keeping those screw-ups to a minimum is the goal,” Johnson said. “I don’t know why Jason didn’t call that timeout, and I’ve heard his explanation, but again, just my opinion, I always wanted to minimize the chance to screw it up and minimize the chance for someone else to screw it up.”

Johnson went on to say no one else needs to have the responsibility of calling timeouts; it falls strictly on the head coach. Johnson’s final message to Garrett was to “take charge of” the game and call timeouts when they should be called and in Sunday’s case, don’t call them when they shouldn’t be called.

Exactly,……. I find it hard to disagree with coach. Brings back memories of the good times. The QB bares some responsibility here as well. A 31 year old QB not knowing when to manage the clock in a two minute drill with two time outs?

Both Jason Garrett and Tony Romo makes blunder after blunder. I find fault at Jason not making an issue with a booth call that clearly showed the Cowboys making the first down when the Cardinals were on there heels. Which was tantamount to a time out and much needed rest for a befuddled Cardinals defense at the time. I just find it strange the guy never seems to own up to his mistakes. Never,….. and there are many during this season alone.

every team makes mistakes, what made this one so bad was it cost them the game.
