Dallas Cowboys Foolish for Not Calling WR Jesse Holley

The 2012 NFL free agency period is nearly a month old and the Dallas Cowboys have yet to contact receiver Jesse Holley. Dallas is without a viable No. 3 receiver at this point in the off-season with voluntary workouts scheduled to start on Monday while Holley is busy “maybe” visiting other NFL teams. The Cowboys are wasting valuable time by not locking up Holley as the third wideout behind Miles Austin and Dez Bryant.

Sure, the Cowboys already re-signed Kevin Ogletree, but he’s not sure thing. All teams need a solid No. 3 receiver, but especially those like Dallas that have two top receivers that are injury-prone. The team contends that Ogletree is “more experienced” although he’s only played one more season than Holley. However, the 28-year-old Holley is a better investment than the 24-year-old Ogletree.

Now that’s not to say the Cowboys shouldn’t have re-signed Ogletree; he’s a speedy youngster with a ton of potential, but Dallas is foolish to have not even contacted Holley by now. To make it fair, we’ll say Dallas should re-sign Holley so the two can compete with Dwayne Harris for the No. 3 job.

Holley was activated for the first time in 2011 and made his mark early by hauling in a 77-yard reception on the first play of overtime to seal a 27-24 Cowboys victory over the San Francisco 49ers at Candlestick Park in Week 2. He went on to catch seven passes in a very limited amount of playing time, but all seven of them were incredible in that they were game-changers like the bomb against the 49ers or they were gobbled up by the 6’2″ Holley with a defender (or two in one case) draped all over him. Two of the latter description came on third down, mind you.

So what’s keeping the Cowboys? Who knows? Unless team owner and general manager Jerry Jones has a solid receiver targeted in the 2012 NFL draft, the reason is bogus. Holley tweeted on Wednesday about flights to and from somewhere that day and the one before. I asked him about it and that’s when Holley made the “maybe” comment.

Jesse Holley

Holly is a New Jersey native, so he could have been visiting the Buffalo Bills, New York Giants or New York Jets if he was indeed meeting with another team. Other rumors indicate it was the Houston Texans that Holley flew to see.

Regardless, there’s the possibility Holley could meet with 31 teams if the Cowboys keep letting time slip away because there’s no doubt there’s at least a handful of NFL teams that noticed Holley’s ability this past season and would love to snatch him up off the free agent market. Dallas is wasting time for no reason and it will cost the Cowboys if Jones doesn’t wise up soon.

If for no other reason, the Cowboys should keep Holley because he’s radio gold. If you haven’t heard this guy during the Ben & Skin Show on 103.3-FM in Dallas, you’re missing out big time. By far the greatest on-air personality of a player I’ve ever heard. Just throwing that out there in case you still aren’t sold.

  1. T-Roy says:

Dang Jeric, I don’t know if I can read your stuff anymore… You are really concerned with us locking up Jesse Holley?

I want to see what Andre Holmes and Raymond Radaway can do. Personally, I think Radaway becomes the #3 if we don’t draft Streeter or Owusu. McShay is on crack if he thinks the ‘boys would pick Michael Floyd at 14.

…P.S. Garrett wants to run more two tight sets, in the vein of the Patriots offense, so there is no pressing need for a 3rd receiver when that spot will either be filled by the 2nd TE or the FB.

  2. Daryl says:

Jeric, this is by far one of the worst articles I have ever read. Are you seriously that moronic to believe that the Cowboys are making a mistake by not signing Jesse freaking Holley? Dude, give me a break. Did he pay you to write this article? Seriously though, what’s with your infatuation with Holley? What has Holley done? And please don’t bring up the Niner game. The SF db’s purposely left Holley alone because they didn’t believe Romo was crazy enough to throw it to him, and on top of that, Holley wasn’t even fast enought to outrun the safety whom he had a 30 yard advantage on. There is a reason why Holley hasn’t been picked up yet by ANY team. He’s not good. The guy was a TV gimmick from the beginning and his 15 minutes are up. Please wise up and delete this article because it is an absolute joke.

  3. Crippled Shark says:

Dude, Holley is not that good. He is serviceable as a 3 but frankly it was blown coverage by 49ers that allowed him to get that wide open. Granted it was a great catch but Romo put the ball where it needed to be. From an un-drafted free agent to a “reality show” winner to a fill-in role with Dallas; he’s just not that good. Ogletree showed flashes of brilliance and then went south after the injury but he is way better than Holley all things considered. Radaway has speed and has shown plenty during the past camps. Plus Dallas will draft a WR somewhere in the draft and Ryan Broyles is a real possibility in late 2nd or 3rd round. Whoever is the #3 receiver, they will need to also have some special teams skills to see more action during games – that is where Dallas is headed with this role in their schemes.
Dallas also needs to find a nice pass catching TE (hopefully he can do some blocking too?) to start grooming for Wittens replacement in 2-3 years and as a rotational player when Dallas uses the 2 TE sets. Marty B was a bust and Dallas screwed up when they traded Fasano to Miami so Dallas needs to build some depth in that position. With Murray’s ability to catch and run out of the backfield, Dallas’s slot receiver is nothing more than a 5th option in their offense and will need to field some punts as well. Thus Holley is not worth 500K or whatever he is worth.

BTW, I would be ecstatic if Floyd was drafted by Dallas but I suspect both Floyd and Blackmon are gone by that part of the draft. Now if JJ wants to trade up with Jacksonville or possibly St. Louis by offering a switch of positions in the 1st round and Felix Jones; count that as a draft day coup (but I’m dreaming).

Here’s how I see Dallas drafting if they don’t make any trades (I would like to see them trade down and gain additional picks in the 2-4th rounds).

#1 Dontari Poe or Fletcher Cox or Michael Brockers to anchor/rotate the NT position and allow Ratliff to slide out to DE
#2 Ronnel Lewis or Bobby Wagner or best available OLB to rotate with Spencer and become full-time starter by next season.
#3 Broyles, McNutt, Steeter, Givens or best available WR
    #4 Best available TE
#5 Best available CB or Safety
    #6 Best available OL
    #7 Best available DE

Like I said previously, if Dallas could trade and gain more picks for the 2-4th rounds, it would benefit them more by gaining extra players to compete for key position competition needs.

Anyway, I enjoy reading your articles so keep the ideas flowing even if you are way off base on this one. LOL.

I think it’s a good article. Holleys 77 yarder wasn’t blown coverage. If you watch the play, you can see how Holley juked the defenders by slowing down and making it look like his route was finished, then taking off full speed when he was even with them.

Having only seven catches doesn’t tell the whole story. By the end of the season Holley had turned the corner and became a complete reciever. He always got his man blocked without drawing a penalty, and was drawing defenders out of position to open up routes for other recievers. But nobody keeps up with those stats.

Holley is a guy you like having on your team, and someone you would enjoy having in your home town, as he’s very ethical and lives a clean life.

    • Crippled Shark says:

I agree that Holley is a good guy but the sports world is full of good guys that don’t quite make it. I watched the 49ers play over and over and what I saw was Whitner playing soft and he bit on Holley’s plant and then could never catch him from behind. But that is neither here or there as one play doesn’t merit an entire season. Yes, Holley is a great guy and yes, he is a potential rags to riches storyline but not for Dallas and the schemes they run. Anyway, here to hoping he catches on somewhere.
