Strewn with inconsistency and injuries, the time that Felix Jones has spent with the Dallas Cowboys could soon be coming to an end.

One minute, Cowboys’ running back Jones is breaking big runs and victimizing opposing defenses. The next, he’s injured and watching his teammates impotently from the sidelines. To say that Jones’ short NFL career has been filled with ebbs and flows is an understatement. But what does that mean for his future with the Cowboys?

“We’re going to see how his year goes and his health issues along the way and see where it works out,” Cowboys executive Stephen Jones told the Dallas Morning News. “We certainly haven’t ruled out re-signing him, but we’ll see how the year takes us.”

It’s safe to translate that to there being a good chance that Jones might be headed for free agency at season’s end.

As for 2012, it appears that Jones will serve as starting running back DeMarco Murray’s primary backup. Both are big-play threats, and Jones should provide the occasional change-of-pace for the Cowboys’ ground attack.

While he’s waiting to be handed Murray’s leftover touches, Jones is expected to handle the Cowboy’s kickoff return duties. Throughout his career, Jones has returned 53 kickoffs for 1,298 yards (24.5-yard average) and one touchdown (a 98-yard scamper). Of those 53 returns, five of them have gone for over 40 yards.

Since his sophomore year with the Cowboys, though, Jones’ offensive production has seen a significant decline. From a 5.9 yards-per-carry average in 2009 to 4.5 in 2011, injuries and inconsistency have taken their toll on Jones.

At this point, it’s unclear what the future holds for Jones’ relationship with the Cowboys. Unless Murray struggles and Jones returns to his healthy 2009 form, don’t be surprised to see him swimming in the free agent pool come 2013.

The pressure is on. It’s time for Jones to perform or pack up.
