The Denver Broncos just finished up an exciting 2011 season that ended in the AFC divisional round vs. the New England Patriots. The Broncos finished 8-8 in the regular season and won the AFC West division. There are many needs on the Broncos’ roster if they want to keep contending and expand on their 2011 success.

Here is a look at the tight end position, which I think is the Denver Broncos’ biggest offensive need in the off-season:

There’s only so much you can get from Daniel Fells, the current starting tight end for the Denver Broncos. He is decent at everything, but not great at anything. He is better in the run game than he is in the passing game. The Broncos have lacked an all-around great tight end ever since Shannon Sharp left. I think the Broncos should take a serious look at tight ends Martellus Bennett of the Dallas Cowboys and Jacob Tamme of the Indianapolis Colts who are both currently free agents and could be signed at reasonable prices.

Martellus Bennett age 24 -

Bennett has played in 4 NFL seasons with the Dallas Cowboys after being drafted in the 2nd round of the 2008 NFL Draft. He has been the backup behind Jason Witten and plays a lot in 2 tight end sets. He is one of the best run-blocking tight ends in the game and has great size and speed for the passing game. He hasn’t quite lived up to his potential, but I think a change in scenary and the potential to start could boost this guy into a top 10 tight end.

Jacob Tamme age 26 -

Tamme has proven in the last few years he is an adequate back up to All-Pro tight end Dallas Clark. In 2010, a year when Dallas Clark had a season-ending injury early in the year, Tamme stepped in and played almost as good as Clark. He caught 67 passes for 631 yards and 4 touchdowns. I understand that he had perhaps the best quarterback in the history of the game passing to him, but surely playing with one of the best and learning from Manning and Clark has helped his development and chances of becoming a starting tight end even if it means for another team.
