If I told fans that Ty Warren was the key to the Denver Broncos‘ defensive line in 2012, they would probably go into a cold sweat and start to panic. Well, Warren is the key but there’s no reason to panic; trust me. Warren signed with the Broncos as a free agent prior to the 2011 season but did not play a down after tearing his triceps early in training camp. He has now missed two complete seasons but he is an important part of the Broncos defense this year, and I believe he will have a good season.

Warren is not going to be the player he was with the New England Patriots, but he doesn’t have to be. Opposing teams ran up the middle on Denver last season at will and Warren can help remedy that. In Saturday’s scrimmage, Warren occupied two blockers on almost every play allowing the linebackers to make tackles without having to shed blocks. The Broncos’ linebackers are better than most people think but if they are not getting any help from the front four, then that makes their job fifty times harder. Warren might be the one defensive lineman in the NFL that could have a good season, and never make a tackle. His job is to take up two blockers on every play and let those around him make the highlights.

Warren will have help from his friends on the defensive line including; rookie Derek Wolfe, Jason Hunter, Mitch Unrein and of course Elvis Dumervil, but the former New England Patriots star is the key. If Warren does what the Broncos expect him to do, then the two happiest people might be Dumervil and linebacker Von Miller. The two pass rushers had a great season in 2011 with almost no help up the middle. If Warren and Wolfe can collapse the pocket and not allow opposing quarterbacks to step up in the pocket, then Miller and Dumervil are going to be playing in the Pro Bowl at the end of this season.

It will scare some Broncos’ fans but Warren is a big part of what the defense but based on the first ten days of training camp, that’s not a bad thing. Warren is healthy and motivated after sitting out the past two seasons and whenever you get a talented player who is motivated, good things usually follow.
