Denver Broncos executive vice president of football operations John Elway recently stated that his team’s rookie signal-caller, Brock Osweiler, has the potential to be a Super Bowl-caliber quarterback. Elway also states that there are no plans of Osweiler having any major role in the offense until maybe three to four years from now and possibly even longer.
This should give Osweiler plenty of time to develop under Peyton Manning and learn the study and practice habits of perhaps the greatest NFL QB of all time. Elway definitely sees it that way.
“There’s not a better situation for Brock to be in and us to be able to set up the organization for 10 to 15 years, hopefully, to have somebody at that position you believe has the ability to win a Super Bowl,” Elway said.
I believe that the predictions made by Elway are very possible. Osweiler was drafted out of Arizona State University in the 2nd round of the 2012 NFL Draft by the Broncos. He stands at 6’7″ and 242 pounds and he’s got a big arm, maybe the best that came out of the draft this year. He has great pocket presence, a quick release, doesn’t go down easily, and shows great leadership on the field.
The knocks against Osweiler are that he had a lot of turnovers because he gets rolling and has a gunslinger mentality, but early in games, when settled and in control, he has shown that he is very athletic, accurate, and a good game manager.
I just think that Osweiler has all the tools to become a great QB and has the possibility to lead a team deep into the playoffs and, if everything goes right, a shot at a Super Bowl.
Heads turned when Denver spent a second-round draft pick on a quarterback who won’t see the field for years unless forced to because of injury. But Elway, like all of Denver, realized that the quarterback position needed to be upgraded immediately for present and future benefit.
