Detroit Lions Safety Louis Delmas Has Surgery on Knee
The Detroit Lions caught a bad break as starting safety Louis Delmas had surgery on his ailing left knee on Tuesday. Delmas is pretty much the leader of the secondary. The Lions really could not afford to lose him, but he went under the knife to help correct the issues that have plagued his left knee so far in training camp.
Delmas sat out the final five games of the 2011 regular season because of a right knee injury. He has now had surgical procedures done on both knees within the past year and this has to be a concern to the Lions.
The secondary was considered one of the weakest spots of the team’s already much maligned defensive unit. Delmas was to play a key role in Detroit’s resurgence on the defensive side of the ball. Detroit’s secondary was statistically better when he was on the field last season. The unit was not amongst the NFL‘s best by any means, but opposing team’s clearly lit the Lions up through the air with Delmas out.
The team will use Amari Spievey and Erik Coleman at the safety position until further notice. Both players will likely get added time in the first couple of preseason games against the Cleveland Browns and the Baltimore Ravens. Delmas is officially listed as week to week, but there is no official date for his return. Do not be surprised if he misses week one of the season.
