Red-Hot Gagner Continues His Streak

Sam Gagner went from Red Wings friend, to Red Wings foe over the course of a couple days.  The Oilers’ center, who racked up 8 points against the Blackhawks a couple of days ago, scored twice and added an assist as the Edmonton Oilers took care of business against Detroit on Saturday night.

Detroit, playing without All-Star goaltender Jimmy Howard, fought back twice from 2 goal deficits to gain a point on a night they didn’t play their best hockey.  Yours truly believed the game was over when Todd Bertuzzi lit the lamp with just under 4 minutes to play, giving the Wings a 4-3 lead.  The scrappy Oilers were able to tie the contest with only 39 seconds left off the stick of Jordan Eberle.

Joey MacDonald played well in his first Red Wings appearance of the year, but it wasn’t enough.  MacDonald came played the final 45 minutes and shootout, allowing only Eberle’s equalizer and the eventual shootout goals.  Ty Conklin struggled again, giving up 3 goals in the first period before getting the hook from Mike Babcock.

Many positives can be taken out of this one for Wings fans; on a night they didn’t play their best hockey they were able to manage a point on the road.  Those are the types of situations that make championship teams.  I’m not saying, I’m just saying.

The Wings head to Hockeytown Southwest for a game against the Phoenix Coyotes on Monday night.
