2013 Fantasy Baseball: Bobby Parnell Quietly Racking Up Saves

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Considering how frantic fantasy baseball owners have been trying to find saves this season, it is surprising that New York Mets RP Bobby Parnell remains available in 51 percent of CBS Sports leagues.

Parnell has been a middle reliever on the team for years, but he was handed the closer role this spring after a nagging elbow injury forced Frank Francisco to the DL yet again.

Parnell has not disappointed since inheriting his new role, as he has already racked up two saves and currently has a sizzling 1.35 ERA. Parnell has been untouchable this year and can be a great low-end closer in any league.

The righty has a fastball that can top out at 101 MPH. He has always been an amazing strikeout pitcher, so it seems only natural that the team would allow him to close out games. After all, nothing is harder than trying to hit a 100 MPH fastball in the ninth inning.

Parnell will remain the team’s closer once Francisco returns from his elbow injury, simply because the fireballer is pitching too well to be demoted. Parnell may not be an elite closer, and he may not even be the team’s closer by the time the fantasy playoffs come around, but the fireballer has the job right now and that’s all the matters.

As long as Bobby P is still saving games in New York, consider him a viable fantasy closer.
