2013 Fantasy Baseball: SP Hyun-Jin Ryu Making a Name For Himself

Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports

When the Los Angeles Dodgers signed SP Hyun-Jin Ryu in the off-season, many fantasy baseball owners were uncertain whether or not to take a shot on him. Some doubted if the foreigner could make an immediate impact or if he would become just another mid-level starter.

Well, the starter has looked right at home in LA this season and he has quickly become a fantasy star.

The Korean born hurler has transitioned exceptionally well from the Korean Baseball League (KBL) to the MLB. Ryu is 4-2 so far this year and has a respectable 3.40 ERA. HJR is sporting a very impressive 1.21 WHIP, while striking out 9.12 batters per nine innings. He has also issued just 15 walks all season long.

Ryu has shown rather impressive command in his first season in the bigs and has quickly proven that he deserves to be here. He has also only allowed four home runs this year. Home runs can cripple fantasy owners and the fact that Ryu has been able to keep the ball inside the park has only increased his fantasy value.

Ryu will continue to be a strong third starter this fantasy season and will be an extremely valuable keeper in any dynasty leagues. He is still figuring things out in the majors, so he will only get better from here.
