Fantasy Baseball 2013: Jurickson Profar Called Up

Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports

I’d make a pretty generous wager that the majority of the Fantasy Baseball community expected Wil Myers to be the first big name hitting prospect called up to the majors. With the struggles of the Rays offense, it appeared to only be a matter of time.

Well, owners will have to keep waiting for Myers, but in the mean time, another top prospect is going to the show.

Texas Rangers second baseman Ian Kinsler has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with bruised ribs. You know what that means. Highly regarded as one of the game’s top prospects, Jurickson Profar has been called up to fill the void. This is a momentous occasion for those who invest all of their time into fantasy baseball, as we have been waiting for Profar for a while now. Profar has one of the best bats among any prospects, a sound hitter with contact and power. After a relatively slow start in the PCL this year, Profar is now batting .415 over his last 10 contests. Despite being young, he is a smart, patient batter, who has walked 21 times compared to 24 strikeouts. Don’t forget about the speed. He’s stolen six bases in seven attempts and has the speed and skill to steal 25-30 in the big leagues.

Go get Profar now because within the next day or two, it’ll be hard to add him. Fantasy owners go absolutely bonkers once top prospects get called up, and Profar is no exception, especially considering he is a top-five guy. I own Rickie Weeks and have already sent in a claim to add Profar because his ceiling is just so darn high. If he lives up to his full potential over the next few seasons, we could be talking about one of the better fantasy second basemen in baseball.

I’m excited.
