Fantasy Football Dark Horse Sleeper: Thad Lewis

The Buffalo Bills‘ quarterback situation has been a revolving door in 2013. They signed Kevin Kolb in the offseason, drafted E.J. Manuel in the first round and signed Jeff Tuel after the draft.

Kolb suffered a season-ending injury during a preseason game, making Manuel the starter. Manuel left the Week 5 game with a knee injury and will be out for a few weeks. Tuel finished the game poorly. Bills ownership then brought up Thad Lewis from the practice squad and named him the Week 6 starter.

Lewis did not disappoint against the Cincinnati Bengals. He threw for 216 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. He also rushed for 17 yards and another score. His 21 fantasy points were the most by any Bills quarterback this season. He did injure his foot during the game, but the X-rays looked good and he should be ready for Sunday.

As a precaution, the Bills signed Matt Flynn – the same Matt Flynn that was beaten out of the Oakland Raiders starting job by Terrelle Pryor. If Lewis’ foot holds up through a week of practice, Flynn will again sit on the bench as a rookie quarterback takes the field.

Lewis played well in a losing effort and could be a nice add for 16-team or two-QB leagues until Manuel comes back. He targeted tight end Scott Chandler four times and wide receiver T.J. Graham six times. There is also a possibility Lewis and the Bills can get Stevie Johnson back for Week 7.

The Miami Dolphins have allowed 87 points and 56 fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks in the last three games, but are coming off a bye. If Lewis can have another outing like he did in Week 6, then his ownership percentage could reach double digits (currently at 0.1 in ESPN leagues).
