2014 Fantasy Football: Matt Prater Owners Punished For Reaching For A Kicker

One of the most disturbing fantasy football trends throughout the first several weeks of August was that Denver Broncos K Matt Prater was being selected way too high. Sure he finished 25-26 in field goals last year (96.1%), including six kicks of over 50 yards. He also led the entire NFL with an unthinkable 75 extra points thanks to the high-powered offense led by QB Peyton Manning.

Unfortunately, the fantasy community has been reaching for the kicker all summer. The veteran has been spotted as high as the ninth round in some formats, which is absolutely ludicrous considering that most owners don’t draft a kicker until the very last round of the draft.

Well, that trend will come screeching to a halt since the recent report that Prater will be suspended four games for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. The veteran has been in the league’s substance abuse program since being charged with a DUI back in 2011, and according to reports, this suspension also has to deal with alcohol. Prater will likely appeal the recent verdict, but the odds are that the suspension won’t be overturned.

So for all of those people who chose to reach for a kicker this summer, it is not time to face the music and pick up a kicker off the waiver wire.
