2014 Fantasy Football: Josh McCown A Deep Sleeper Candidate

Quarterback Josh McCown truly had an incredible season last year. As a member of the Chicago Bears, McCown stepped in for an injured Jay Cutler and was absolutely magnificent. Not only did he have a 109.9 passer rating, but he brought a nice jolt into the Bears’ offense and proved he still has what it takes to succeed even at the age of 34. During the offseason he was acquired by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and will look to replicate that success this time around as a full fledged starting quarterback.

McCown brings a ton of experience at his position and will put up some impressive numbers this season on a team that has plenty of offensive threats capable of making big plays. Ever since last year, his fantasy stock has been rising to where he could be a true surprise that consistently earns a decent amount of fantasy points.

The Buccaneers were smart to pick him up since he’s now reunited with his former head coach from when he was with the Bears in Lovie Smith. They even tweaked their offensive playbook to favor McCown and his pure pocket passing skills. As he threw for 1,829 yards, 13 touchdowns and only one pick, McCown proved that he’s a winner even with his back against the wall.

He’s been doing very well in training camp and preseason football so far but is still relatively forgotten about when fantasy football owners start drafting their quarterbacks. As a good QB2 or QB3 option, it would be in the best interest of many to pick him up during the middle to late rounds of your fantasy football draft. Keep in mind he’ll have rookie sensation Mike Evans as a premier receiving target as well as veteran Vincent Jackson.

The Buccaneers’ offense is more passing oriented, so McCown will have plenty of opportunities to rack up big fantasy points through touchdowns and huge yards on deep passing plays down the field. As a deep sleeper candidate for 2014, he might very well surprise the fantasy football world with an even better year than what he produced last season.
