Apparently the concussion symptoms have gone away and Bernard Pierce is ready to go for the Baltimore Ravens in Week 1 against the Cincinnati Bengals. Pierce, who is widely known around the league as one of the best backup running backs, will be carrying the load on Sunday. Ray Rice, who was caught on camera dragging his wife, is facing a two-game suspension from the NFL.

By having two games as the starting running back, Pierce will have a golden opportunity to steal some carries from the incumbent starter in Rice. The Ravens revamped their offensive line over the offseason and added Steve Smith in free agency to improve their passing game. That being said, there could be more holes for Pierce. The third-year back is a physical runner with a downhill mindset. In his rookie year, which was far better than his 2013 season, Pierce had over 530 rushing yards while averaging 4.9 yards per carry. Pierce is a versatile player who is definitely a name to remember as the season progresses.

There have been many questions regarding Pierce on whether he should play or not. I’m a believer in the Temple product. He will be a risky play, given he is coming off a concussion, but Pierce will play a huge part in Baltimore’s offense in their opening matchup. Pierce is probably a No. 2 running back right now for most teams. Even though Rice is coming back in Week 3, Pierce is a nice handcuff and he if produces well in the first two weeks. Offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak might have to bite the bullet and start Pierce instead of the veteran Rice.
