2014 Fantasy Hockey: Filip Forsberg Quickly Showing Potential

There aren’t too many rookies that are able to establish themselves as a fantasy hockey star in their first year in the league. Obviously C Nathan McKinnon blossomed into a fantasy superstar last season with the Colorado Avalanche, but he was one of the only examples from the 2013-14 season.

One rookie that is having a breakout season similar to McKinnon is F Filip Forsberg of the Nashville Predators.

In his brief stint last season, the Swede racked up only five points (1 G/4 A) in 13 games. He had a player rating of -8 and registered a timid 1.5 shots on goal per contest. He showed some glimpses of stardom, but he was buried on the bottom line and tended to look lost on the ice.

This season, though, Forsberg has been on fire. In seven games, Forsberg has already racked up seven points (one goal/six assists). The 20-year-old has also shot the puck 1.9 times per game and has been much more involved offensively, as he has been promoted to the team’s first line.

Forsberg has bounded well with his line mates, C Mike Ribeiro and RW James Neal, and the first-year phenom has quickly distanced himself from the rest of forwards on the team. He will continue to play on the top line and will benefit from the important minutes on the power play as well.

Forsberg will be a reliable fantasy option for the rest of the season and for many years to come.
