The Winnipeg Jets and Washington Capitals met tonight for a game with obvious playoff implications. When the opening whistle blew in Winnipeg, the Capitals led the Jets by four points for the final spot in the Eastern Conference playoff race.

When the final whistle blew, the Jets were just two points back of the Capitals thanks to their 3-2 victory and goals from captain Andrew Ladd, Nik Antropov and Dustin Byfuglien.

What the fans did in between those whistles, though, is nothing short of awesome. Listen:

Beginning at the :18 mark, you can hear Jets fans chanting “Crosby’s Better” in a chorus clearly directed at Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin. The announcer even acknowledges it around the 1:01 mark.

The statement has become painfully obvious over the last two seasons. In 2010, Ovechkin finished with a career-low 32 goals and 85 points in 79 games.

That year, Sidney Crosby finished with 32 goals and 66 points. In 41 games.

Ovechkin is well on his way to finishing this season with a points-per-game number under 1.00 for the first time in his career, while Crosby has recorded 14 points in his 9 games.

I believe this is the first documented case of a non-Pittsburgh crowd coming up with a pro-Crosby chant.
