6 Rants to “Green Bay Packers Select Nick Perry In Rant Sports...”

  1. JR says:

Cullen Jenkins is the missing man, so what the Packers need is a defensive end that can get enough push in to the backfield or occasionally pressure the quarterback thereby drawing a double team. In 2011, the Packers had the same players at outside linebacker and as you say they had more sacks in 2010. The key is the three linemen. The Packers could get one of these college pass rushers and still not do as well as they did in 2010. At pick 28, the best value may be an offensive player. There is a certain running back that may be available at 28, who could make a prolific offense a lethal offense in 2012. They don’t need to take a defensive end in the first either. Cullen Jenkins was not drafted.

I agree the Packers need to draft a defensive lineman who can get to the quarterback. Nick Perry is capable of playing defensive end but I believe the Packers would make him an outside linebacker similar to what Matthews does. Obviously, without any pressure in the middle the two outside guys do not stand much of a chance. I do believe they will take a defensive player in the first round opposed to them taking an offensive player.

  2. Doug says:

Sure, Nick Perry would be nice, but in Green Bay’s defense linebackers ALSO drop into coverage. Can he do that? I haven’t heard or read anywhere that he can handle that so all he does is fill half of the need at that position and we still need another linebacker to split time with him. What we need is a big pass rushing defensive end to play the right end, not a part time starter at right outside linebacker.

    • Michael Terrill says:

You are absolutely correct. In the 3-4 defense the Packers run it is critical the outside linebackers know how to drop into coverage. Although Perry has never done this at USC, I still believe he is athletic enough to learn the position. I also think linebackers coach Kevin Greene will be able to teach him up. I agree with you that Green Bay needs a pass rushing defense end. Obviously, Cullen Jenkins was huge for the Packers in their Super Bowl run. Mike Neal was supposed to replace him and clearly that has not panned out yet. If there is a player with the capability of rushing the quarterback at the NFL level with the qualities of a first-round pick then I would hope the Packers select him.
