BREAKING: Indianapolis Colts Fire Head Coach Jim Caldwell
The Indianapolis Colts announced that they have fired head coach Jim Caldwell, according to a report from the team’s official website.
Caldwell, 57, had been the Colts’ head coach for three seasons, winning 26 games.
He won his first 14 games and led the Colts to a Super Bowl appearance in his rookie season. Were it not for the decision to rest key starters, including eventual MVP Peyton Manning in the season’s final game, Caldwell’s Colts could have easily become the second team in three seasons to win all 16 regular season games and lose in the Super Bowl.
In 2010, Caldwell led the Colts to 10 victories and the AFC South title. But the Colts were upset by the New York Jets, 17-16, in the AFC wild-card game.
The 2011 season couldn’t have gone worse for Caldwell. Four-time MVP Peyton Manning missed the entire season following two neck surgeries this offseason and the Colts limped out to an 0-13 start behind the terrible threesome of Kerry Collins, Dan Orlovsky, and Curtis Painter. The Colts won two of their final three games but still clinched the NFL’s top overall pick in the 2012 draft.
Whether they use the pick on Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck, as many expect, and what they do with future Hall of Famer Peyton Manning is going to be one of the biggest storylines in the NFL in years. But new general manager Ryan Grigson will have someone else making those decisions.
