Lets examine the possible coaching candidates just a day after Jim Caldwell was relieved of his duties. There are still numerous head coaching jobs available with plenty of candidates available.

Some jobs have been filled, such as the St. Louis Rams hiring Jeff Fisher, the Jacksonville Jaguars hiring Mike Mularkey, and the Kansas City Chiefs hiring Romeo Crennel. That still leaves some ideal candidates for the Colts.

The Colts have said they are looking for someone to build on their program and last more than a few years. They are also leaning toward someone with an offensive background. Maybe an offensive coordinator or an x-head coach will be on their short list.

Here is a small list of coaches that should be on that short list.

Jon Gruden has spent the last few years as a commentary on Monday Night Football. Gruden needs to be on the short list for one reason; he would bring the toughness that the Colts desperately need. They have been labeled “soft” in recent years and with his toughness and ability to get the best out of players, Gruden may be just what the Colts need.

Another guy on the list is Marty Shottenheimer. He is a guy that wins no matter who he coaches. It would be a perfect fit for the simple fact that he can keep a team together in any situation. With the good possibility of the Colts drafting Andrew Luck this would be the guy to keep everyone happy and focused on the goal at hand.

The last guy as a coaching possibility is the only one on this list who is currently coaching, Marty Mornhinweg. Mornhinweg is currently the offensive coordinator for the Eagles and this hire makes the most sense. When the Colts hired GM Ryan Grigson he came over form the Eagles, so he has worked with Mornhinweg, and knows him on a personal level. He has coached the offense in Philadelphia the last few years and has created some very impressive plays. The fact is Mornhinweg would be able to adjust his playbook for Manning or Luck depending on who would be there. He has paid his dues and now it is his chance for a real opportunity.

All three coaching candidates are offensive minds and would be a sure success for the Colts. There have been names from the college game that have come up like Chip Kelly and Les Miles, but it would have to take more for the Colts to pull those two away from their schools.

Regardless who coaches the Colts in 2012, they will have a different look than what they had in 2011.
