When a team has such a bad year and receive the number one draft pick it could lead to a circus atmosphere. Owner Jim Irsay wants nothing of the sorts. Friday Irsay came out and said they will draft Andrew Luck with the first pick. In doing so it puts a stop to all of the “who do they pick up” talk. Irsay was asked if he would still draft Luck if Manning was not injured and he said he probably would, you can’t pass up on a guy like this.

In all of the decisions Irsay has made in the last few weeks, this is the smartest one. I don’t mean picking Luck, I mean coming out this early and stopping all the guesses by reporters of who will be picked. That leads us to the question everyone wants the answer to, what in the world do you do with Peyton? That will be answered in the near future and one thing is for certain, Andrew Luck and Peyton Manning will be on the same team as of right now. It may change before April but we will see.

Now that the Colts will have the quarterback of the future lets look at what their needs are at other positions. For the longest time the Colts have been known to throw the ball about 80%. With this new regime and possibly a new quarterback, they need a solid running game. They do have Joseph Adai,  a great back, but he has yet to prove he can carry the load for the Colts.

The following players would help the Colts immediately. A few runing back, if available, need to be drafted by the Colts.

Lamar Miller is a 5 ft 11inch, 212 lb Sophomore. He’s a speedy back that rushed for 1272 yards and 9 touchdowns this season at The University of Miami.  Another good running back is David Wilson, a 5 ft 10 inch junior from Virgina Tech.  He rushed for 1709 and had 9 touchdowns. He is a solid runner and could even remain in the third round if the Colts wanted to take him then.

A position the Colts need to look at is tight end. With the uncertainty of Dallas Clark they need to look at Dwayne Allen from Clemson, a 6 ft 4 inch, 255 lb, Junior. He was dependable for the Tigers in college recording 50 catches for 598 yards and 8 touchdowns. A tight end is a young quarterbacks best friend.

The Colts have shown that they are building with a whole new look from front office, to coach ,to players so I would expect them to be very aggressive in this Aprils draft. The players listed above would be a great fit in Indianapolis and as a fan you could look forward to watching these players on Sunday.

Even with only two wins this past season and everyone saying this is going to be a “rebuilding year”, I look at it as an opportunity year for some of these younger players. Don’t expect the Colts, with or without Manning, to stay down for long.
