Matt Stamey-US PRESSWIRE

Talks between the Indianapolis Colts and free agent defensive end Robert Mathis are “warming up,” According to Bob Kravitz of the Indianapolis Star.

When the Indianapolis Colts hired Chuck Pagano their first priority is getting their defense back to the ways they all know they can.

Every year you see great NFL players released from their teams instead of resigning. This year has been fairly quiet, but with the news of Hines Ward not returning to the Steelers, it makes you realize how important resigning veteran players is.

One of the first steps is resigning their all-pro defensive lineman Robert Mathis. Mathis is a 31-year-old football player that has won a championship, and is the leader on the defensive side of the ball. Mathis is one of the better lineman out there this off season.

Robert Mathis will be the second most sought after defensive lineman out there in free agency, if he gets there. The Indianapolis Colts must resign Mathis to ensure themselves a strong defensive line. The last thing they can afford to do is lose Mathis and have to rebuild at that position. They need to draft a guy to eventually replace Mathis, but if they lose him they would need to draft one early. Let’s be honest, can the Colts afford to take a defensive lineman so early in the Draft? I don’t think so, they need to draft an interior lineman or a safety instead.

Mathis will be pricey, but will be worth it in the long run. Remember what Feeney and Mathis looked like when they had a lead in a game? They were two of the most dominate defensive lineman of their time. So resigning Mathis ensures that at least one half of the speed rushers will be in place for 2012.

It is important to get a deal done, and news out of Indianapolis is that the talks are “heating up” to get something done. Colts fans should be very excited at having this pro-bowler back in uniform for the 2012 season.

Let’s just hope nothing falls through and the deal is official soon.

Where in one line does it mention they are close to a deal?

  1. [...] As far as Robert Mathis, a few weeks back the talks were going well, but lately they have been at a standstill. Mathis makes the most sense to tag; you can’t afford to lose a veteran presence like Mathis, not only on the field but also in your locker room. I understand the idea of rebuilding but, you can’t turn your back on everyone just for the sake of a restart. Robert Mathis has been too important to just let go into the free agent market. There was progress, talked about here Excellent News, Indianapolis and Robert Mathis Getting Closer To a New deal. [...]
