Mike Mularkey has not even been introduced as the Jacksonville Jaguars head coach and fans are already calling him a bust.

In the what have you done for me lately nature of the NFL, the only thing currently on Mularkey’s resume is the poor performance his Atlanta Falcons offense had on Sunday in the first round of the playoffs. Fortunately for Mularkey, the people who make the decisions in the Jaguars front office are not as nearly short sighted as the fans appear to be.

The truth of it is, if this hire was announced on the Friday morning following the Falcons 41-14 victory over the Jaguars less then a month ago, fans would be calling this a great hire.

Mularkey has been successful in his NFL coaching career and has previous head coaching experience. His success as offensive coordinator with the Pittsburgh Steelers led him to become the head coach of the Buffalo Bills in 2004. His first season with the Bills he led them to a 9-7 record, the best record the franchise has had since their last playoff birth in 1999. His 5-11 record in 2005 can be directly linked to the poor quarterbacks he was saddle with by the Bills front office, JP Losman and Kelly Holcomb. Disagreements with the Bills front office led him to walk away from the Bills job after only two seasons.

Since 2008, Mularkey has been in charge of the Atlanta Falcons offense. The Falcons reached the playoffs in three of the four seasons he was with the team, due largely in part to the development of Matt Ryan into an elite NFL quarterback. The Jaguars front office must be convinced that Mularkey can do the same for Blaine Gabbert as he did for Ryan.

From the outset of the Jaguars coaching search, it was clear that they were targeting a coach with an offensive mind. Of the names that have been linked with Jaguars job over the past week and a half, Mularkey has the most accomplished resume.

Contrary to what many Jaguars fans believe, neither Bill Cowher nor John Gruden were never going to be candidates for the job. Mularkey was the best hire from the list of candidates that were available to them.

So step back from the ledge Jaguars fans. Give Mularkey a chance to prove himself before you write him off.

One Rant to “Mike Mularkey Is Great Hire For Jacksonville Jagua...”

  1. Ron Mexico says:

Jaguars fans are retarded. Between the two potential candidates, Mularkey and Jay Gruden, I think the Jags front office coaching search was executed perfectly. And honestly, I’d rather have a former head coach that has had at some playoff experience rather than a hot up and coming coordinator, as Del Rio was. Mojo is and upgrade for Mularkey, and a dynamic playmaker ala Roddy White will be sitting in free agency this year. If they retain Mel Tuker and the D, improve Blaine Gabbert and the offense. I think it’s safe to assume high hopes for a good record in the AFC South next year.
