The tarps that currently cover about 10,000 seats at EverBank field have been a constant source of national ridicule ever since the Jacksonville Jaguars decided to use them before the 2005 season.

While the tarps bring the capacity of the stadium down to a more manageable size for one of the smallest markets in the NFL, the tarps have been the thing that people have pointed to when talking about the Jaguars struggles to sell tickets.

The truth is that without the tarps, EverBank field would be the fourth highest capacity stadium in the NFL behind only the stadiums in the New York, Washington and Dallas markets. Jacksonville has a significantly lower population than those markets, and even with the tarps still has a bigger capacity than 11 NFL stadiums.

Despite how practical the tarps are for the Jaguars, new owner Shahid Khan wants them to disappear.

“To me, every day I look at the tarps it is like underachieving,” Khan told Daniel Kaplan of the Sports Business Journal.

If Khan plans on selling enough tickets to remove the tarps from his stadium, he is going to need to do more than offer fair ticket prices. He is going to need to put a winning team on the field.

More than any marketing scheme the Jaguars can cook up, winning on a consistent basis is the best thing the team can do to put fans in the stands.
