Jacksonville Jaguars General Manager Identifies Guys He Wants To Re-Sign
Although free agency does not open until March 13, teams are able to negotiate with their own free agents exclusively until then.
The Jacksonville Jaguars have a couple key pieces that could hit the market in March, but general manager Gene Smith has identified a few guys he would like to see remain in a Jaguars uniform.
When specifically asked about the future of defensive end Jeremy Mincey, cornerback Rashean Mathis, safety Dwight Lowery and kicker Josh Scobee by Tania Ganguli of The Florida Times-Union, Smith said he sees those players as part of the future in Jacksonville.
With the combine being this weekend in Indianapolis, it allows teams and agents the first opportunity to meet about pending free agents. Smith said the goal was to have all of their own free agents that they wish to keep signed before they hit the open market on March 13.
While Smith did not want to get into the specifics of any of the ongoing contract negotiations, there are reports that the team and Scobee are currently negotiating a long-term deal but are still far apart in what they want.
