The Jacksonville Jaguars placed left guard Will Rackley on the injured reserve list on Friday as part of their effort to get their roster down to 53-man limit.

Rackley suffered a high ankle sprain early in the Jaguars training camp and was expected to be ready to return for the start of the regular season, but Rackley suffered a setback this week that led the Jags to place the offensive lineman on injured reserve.

Rackley, who started 14 games for the Jaguars at left guard in 2011, was expected to compete with Eben Britton for the starting left guard position before he went down with his ankle injury. The Jaguars will now go into the season with former right tackle Britton at left guard and start Cameron Bradfield at right tackle.

Rackley will not be eligible for the new NFL rule that allows each team to bring a player off of the injured reserve list later in the season, because Rackley was never on the Jaguars official 53-man roster this season. The new rule only allows teams to use the new injured reserve rule on players who were on their initial 53-man roster.

Without Rackley, the Jaguars now have questions about their interior offensive line depth. The Jaguars did keep undrafted rookie free agent Mike Brewster as a backup at both guard positions and center.

Brewster is inexperienced however, and Jaguars general manager Gene Smith may decide to look to the waiver wire this weekend to find some veteran depth in the middle of the line.
