Syracuse Coach Called Bill O’Brien About Players

As the subplots on the Penn State fallout continue to keep college football fans entertained, current Penn State head coach Bill O’Brien is dealing with the situation from every angle. The latest involved a phone call from Syracuse head coach Doug Marrone.

From interviews, team meetings, and keeping up a strong front, one would assume his plate is full these days.

That hasn’t stopped the feeding frenzy around his now very available roster of players. As reported here on Laces Out earlier this week, the sharks are circling the waters of Happy Valley. While the ACC coaches spoke on the topic when asked at the ACC Kickoff Media Day, others have taken a different approach.

According to reports, six Illinois assistants were milling around the Penn State football facilities, ready to take their crack at the vulnerable roster. As O’Brien told ESPN Radio’s Mike and Mike, Marrone at least had the decency to call.

“There are some coaches who have called. I can tell you that Doug Marrone’s called, George O’Leary’s called. … You know these are guys that understand the profession and I think, have done a heck of a job of reaching out to me and if a guy contacts them, they are going to listen, that’s what they’ve said, and I understand, but at the same time, they are just letting me know that, ‘Hey, if somebody contacts us, we’ll probably take a peek at him.’”

While the premise of calling is forthcoming and honest, the idea points to how strange this entire process is and will continue to be. Laces Out will keep you updated on when and where the current Penn State football players land.
