It’s not often that a player who takes his disgust with his team to Twitter if he doesn’t intend on greater action soon thereafter.

This afternoon, that player is true freshman Oklahoma Sooners offensive guard John J. McGee who tweeted the following:

Football isn't for everybody.

It’s obvious the young man has decided not to play football any longer and is sticking to that decision. You have to respect the fact he realizes now– before he gets too deep into his collegiate career– that maybe the college game isn’t for him.

Not so many people make the right decision in this regard, or are brave enough to admit to themselves that maybe it’s time to move on to a new chapter in life.

Plenty of student-athletes play for their respective universities for four years and are miserable throughout the process just because they think it’s what they are supposed to do or are beholden to do because of their life circumstances.

Maybe John McGee is an exception to the rule– a guy who’s self-actualized enough to realize there are greater things on the horizon than football.

Maybe he has some personal situations which demand his attention back in Texarkana.

Regardless, it’s none of our business, and his right to walk away whenever he chooses. Oklahoma– in spite of the fact they have had their share of turmoil this off-season–will certainly respect that decision.

That doesn’t mean they have to like it, but respect it, they should.

Football’s not for everyone.
