Johnny Manziel has been named the starting quarterback for the Texas A&M Aggies this upcoming season.

The reshirt freshman earned the job over sophomores Jameill Showers and Matt Joeckel.

The Parade All-American out of high school has apparently outplayed the competition in recent practices, particularly in Saturday’s scrimmage.

First year head-coach Kevin Sumlin had this to say about the move in a press release:

“Johnny has performed the best at this stage and we will proceed until the season opener with him getting the first-team reps. My policy is simple, really: The best player plays. Competition is a great thing and we need more competition at all of our positions. All of our quarterbacks have competed well, and I expect them to continue to push Johnny.”

This is a bold move for Sumlin, however, because the nineteen-year-old Manziel was arrested and jailed over the summer for his part in a fight which was reported to have started when he and his friends called another group of men a racial slur.

He was also charged with having multiple fake IDs, which he then presented to authorities when asked.

Despite his three misdemeanors, there was no disciplinary action taken against the quarterback by the football program.

Manziel has a chance to be a great quarterback for the Aggies, particularly in Sumlin’s system, as long as he stays out of trouble.

Regardless, it looks like the Aggies have their man, and for now, Johnny Manziel is the one chosen to lead the Aggies into their first season in the SEC.
