Despite what many may think, and the NCAA’s best efforts, the sun still rises every day over the mountains of Happy Valley.

The Valley once again has something to be happy about as Penn State has picked up its first 2013 commitment since the NCAA levied sanctions against the program.

It is a small victory for Penn State after the program has lost so much, but it is a step in the right direction.

The committed recruit is three-star defensive back Jordan Smith of Washington D.C. Smith is the tenth commit in the 2013 class, but the first since the sanctions.

The commitment shows recruits are not completely turned away by the sanctions the NCAA levied on July 23, which included a four-year bowl and massive scholarship reductions, among several other penalties. The news, along with quarterback Christian Hackenberg and tight end Adam Breneman reiterating their commitments to the Nittany Lions, shows the program’s reputation and tradition has not been completely spoiled by the Sandusky scandal.

Many believe it will take Penn State years to make its way back to prominence on the national level. Others believe they never will. However, if there is anything to be learned by the sanctions at USC, a program steeped in tradition with such a strong following can eventually return itself to the top.
