LA Kings: List Of Potential Destinations For Jonathan Bernier Is Very Limited
With their Stanley Cup-winning roster now completely locked up and set to return next season, the focus for the Los Angeles Kings front office can turn to looking for finding a new home for backup goaltender Jonathan Bernier.
Bernier has requested a trade on more than one occasion this summer, after the Kings inked Jonathan Quick to a monster 10-year contract extension. A young goaltender with big time potential, Bernier just wants an opportunity to start. He’s sure not going to get that for at least the next decade in Hollywood.
Bernier and Roberto Luongo pretty much make up the trade market at this point as far as goaltending goals, but the market for interested teams seems to have dwindled, limiting potential destinations for both.
The ideal landing spot would be with the Toronto Maple Leafs. They need a goalie and Luongo reportedly wants to avoid that media bonanza. There’s been talk of some sort of deal involving Matt Frattin for Bernier, but nothing has neared any serious discussion yet.
If not, it’s really up in the air as to where he could land. The Florida Panthers need a goalie, but it’s likely Luongo or stick with what they’ve got. The Chicago Blackhawks look to have settled on their goaltending situation and the Columbus Blue Jackets are “set” after trading for Sergei Bobrovsky.
The options are limited. It seems like it’s Toronto or bust for Jonathan Bernier, but some club may jump out and surprise us. One thing that is certain is that Jonathan Bernier will be traded this summer, it’s just a matter of when and where. And if Dean Lombardi can force someone to overpay.
