David Butler II-US PRESSWIRE

With all of the focus on the upcoming draft, it is easy to forget about the quarterbacks that are already in place for the Miami Dolphins.  Granted, David Garrard was just signed, so he may be off to the side on the peripheral, but Matt Moore, that guy has just been lost in the shuffle.

Moore came in for an injured Chad Henne in week 4 last season, and played out the rest of the season as the starter.  In that time he threw for close to 2,500 yards, had 16 touchdowns to 9 interceptions, and won 6 of the remaining 12 games.  In three games he threw for 3 touchdowns, the first to do so since Chad Pennington called the signals.  Not that this is a huge accomplishment, but if you are a Dolphins fan looking for some assurance, you take whatever you can get.  Moore’s QB Rating for the season was 87.1, which could be much worse, and he had quality wins that included a sweep of the Buffalo Bills, and a season finale that crushed the New York Jets playoff hopes.

In an interview last week, head coach Joe Philbin called Moore an “unconventional” quarterback, but went on to say that he “has a knack for getting it done”.  This is not the resounding endorsement that Moore would love to hear, but Philbin said that he had made it clear to the returning signal caller that he would have a chance to compete for the job.  This was the same promise, Philban says, that he gave to Davis Garrard when they signed him to the team.

While the quarterback position in Miami has gotten the lion’s share of the attention this offseason, the Dolphins have needs everywhere on the field.  While it is doubtful that either Garrard, or Moore, are the game changer that team ownership and fans are looking for, they have both proven that they can deliver solid performances.  Hopefully the team realizes this, and spends draft picks where they are actually needed, instead of over paying for a quarterback early in the draft.
