It’s been awhile but Mike Singletary has found his way back into the headlines. Singletary’s former “project” Vernon Davis just had the game of his life and many are giving Singletary credit for his role in Davis’ maturation process. Singletary famously sent Davis to the locker room early a few years ago for not giving 100 percent in a game. An enraged Singletary flew on the hinges in the post game press conference, in a clip that will probably make it’s way to a Coors Light commercial someday. Oh yeah, did I mention that no one seems to know if Singletary is getting fired or promoted with the Vikings?

First off, I do give Singletary a lot of the credit for the game we just saw from Vernon Davis. Without the berating Davis received on the sidelines a few years ago, who knows if he would have ever turned into the player he is today. Yes, Jim Harbaugh deserves a lot of credit for furthering Davis, but with some players its a long process and Singletary deserves credit for getting the ball rolling with Davis.

Now on to Singletary’s current gig, or maybe lack there of. Vikings defensive coordinator Fred Pagac has been removed from his position and offered to coach the linebackers, but there’s one problem, Mike Singletary is the currently the linebackers coach. Something has to give here, and I don’t know what to think.

On one had you would have to think if Singletary hasn’t been fired already that he is getting promoted, because why else would he still be around? Let’s face it, you can’t really get demoted from linebackers coach, can you?

On the other hand, would Singletary make a good defensive coordinator? I think he would do fine. He is after all a Hall of Fame defensive player. While he did fail in San Francisco as the head coach, he definitely showed he belongs on an NFL coaching staff. The guy deserves one more chance to show he can lead an entire unit.

So who is the best man for this job? Some would say it’s Steve Spagnuolo. Spagnuolo is arguably the biggest name available for defensive coordinator jobs. The Vikings have been rumored to be interested in Spagnuolo, as they should be, but so are the Colts, Eagles, and Saints.

At this point there are certainly more questions than answers, but either way the Vikings are going to upgrade at defensive coordinator in 2012. If I had to pick who is most likely to get the job at this point, I go with Mike Singletary.
