San Diego Padres Have Played Themselves Out of Guaranteed Draft Pick

San Diego Padres

Not every team has the luxury of making the MLB postseason but every team always has something to play for. The San Diego Padres have been playing well enough during the month of September that they can most certain brag to anyone about it. Among those on their list of victims as far as series won are the Atlanta Braves and Pittsburgh Pirates. Such a good final month would almost always be a great thing for any team. The Padres do have one negative thing about this good month however.

The ten worst records in baseball are given the first ten guaranteed draft picks in the next year’s draft. Having played nearly .600 baseball all month the Padres have themselves all the way up to third place in the National League West. Unfortunately for them, they are also improved enough to be a couple of games better than the ten worst records. So in effect they have played well enough to play themselves out of a guaranteed top ten pick in the draft.

That isn’t necessarily a huge thing and for the Padres it probably won’t matter at all. What it does though is highlight just important winning is to each and every team in MLB. Here is a team that some would say have nothing to play for but they have been one of the best this month. If they had nothing to play for they would not mind losing enough games to get themselves that top ten pick. Winning is just more important than that in the game of baseball no matter who is playing. That is just one more reason to love it.
