Biography Justin Blackmon Wide Receiver Oklahoma State #81 Junior Redshirt

Pros

Football IQ: Blackmon’s intelligence as a route runner helped him win the Billetnikoff Award for the Nations best receiver in 2010 as a sophomore redshirt.

Awareness: Blackmon displays great field vision for recognizing where the football is off the snap.

Intangibles: Justin Blackmon has elite intangibles in when it comes to being a wide receiver.  I think his intangibles as a receiver may be just as good as AJ Green’s coming out of Georgia a year ago.

Speed: Justin Blackmon has the speed that NFL Scouts look for when evaluating a wide receiver.

Burst off the Release: Justin Blackmon has the burst to create separation off the release.

Route Running: Justin Blackmon displays smooth crisp route running.

Soft Hands: Blackmon has the soft hands that are necessary to make the necessary catches when the football is thrown his way.

Jumping: Justin Blackmon can leap in the air to make a necessary catch.

Agility: Blackmon has great agility to separate himself from defenders when timing his route running.

Elusiveness: I’ve praised Alshon Jeffery’s elusiveness.  I like Blackmon’s elusiveness as a wide receiver better.

Yards Per Catch: Blackmon has maintained 12 yards per catch in each of his 3 seasons at Oklahoma State.  Justin Blackmon can move the chains for the Oklahoma State Cowboys.

Can Be Used as a Flanker Receiver: Blackmon has the ability to be used as a flanker at Oklahoma State.  Blackmon can give a field cornerback trying to stop him fits.

Can Be Used as a Secondary Receiver: Blackmon can be used as a secondary receiver against boundary cornerbacks.

Can Be Used as a Slot Receiver: There have been plays where Justin Blackmon has lined up on the inside as a slot receiver.

Work Ethic: Blackmon has a relentless work ethic.

Character: Blackmon has very high character.  He helped a patient and die hard Oklahoma State fan fight through cancer.  You can say that Blackmon may not be a #1 receiver.  You cannot say that Just Blackmon has no character because that’s simply a foolish statement on your part.

Production: Justin Blackmon provides elite production.  Back to back seasons of 100 receptions 1,200 receiving yards, and 15 receiving touchdowns at Oklahoma State.

Potential: Justin Blackmon has the potential to be a secondary receiver.  He has that ability to contribute as a secondary receiver the way Terrell Owens aided Jerry Rice, the way Randy Moss aided Cris Carter, the way Torry Holt aided Issac Bruce, the way Anquan Boldin aided Larry Fitzgerald, the way Calvin Johnson aided Roy Williams before Williams got dealt.  Justin Blackmon can have the potential to become an immediate impact player if he is used as a secondary receiver.  I cannot see him succeeding as a #1 flanker primary receiving target.

Ideal fits for Blackmon would be Minnesota or Arizona as that secondary receiver on the roster.  I think Blackmon will fail to live up to expectations if the Jaguars get him.

Cons

Physical Ability: Justin Blackmon has not impressed me with his physical ability as a receiver.

Durability: Blackmon has been injured in some games.  Blackmon does not have durability issues.  I have to question his durability at this point due to a lack of size.

Size: Blackmon is very undersized at 6 foot 1 208 pounds.

Learning Rate: Blackmon learns plays at an average rate.  He may struggle as a rookie, but Justin Blackmon should grasp an NFL playbook over time.

Drops Passes: Justin Blackmon has a tendency to drop passes when watching him on film.  I’ve seen Blackmon drop passes when watching him on film even with his consistent production.

Spectacular Catcher: I have not seen Blackmon make spectacular catches when watching him on film.

Catches In Traffic: I want to see Justin Blackmon catch the football in traffic more often.

Red Zone Threat: Blackmon is not a red zone threat due to his lack of size at 6 foot 1 208 pounds.  Most of Blackmon’s big plays came off of deep passes even though he has the ability to catch short and medium passes as well.

My thoughts on Justin Blackmon

If your team is looking for a second receiver to pair up next to your best receiver than Blackmon is the perfect solution.  If you want a #1 receiver like the Jacksonville Jaguars you may need to look elsewhere because both Alshon Jeffery and Michael Floyd have the size and physical tools of a #1 wide out that Blackmon lacks.

Blackmon reminds me of Anquan Boldin and Torry Holt as a secondary receiving option.  Blackmon lacks the physical tools that Dez Bryant had which is why I am not as high on Blackmon as I was on Dez Bryant despite the consistency.
