The Los Angeles Lakers suffered another tough defeat against the Dallas Mavericks last night, but showed some positive signs. They outrebounded the Mavericks by 23 and 24 of their 63 rebounds came on the offensive end of the court. This type of effort is needed every game by the team, as rebounding should be one of the team’s strong points.

The Lakers have struggled all season with different areas of the game, as they just do not have the talent to compete in a deep Western Conference. They have already had to fight through key injuries that have ruined the depth on their team, and are well out of the playoff race. But there are signs that they are improving as a team, and learning to play together.

Rebounding is an area that the Lakers should be dominating on a nightly basis. Jordan Hill is a very talented rebounder who battles for every board, and has a great nose for the ball. Carlos Boozer has also been known for his rebounding despite being slightly undersized at the power forward position. There have been times throughout the season where a few lapses have caused him to lose positioning, but for the most part he understands where to be. Ed Davis has been great for the team so far, averaging three offensive rebounds a game, and using his length and athleticism to create second opportunities.

The Lakers also have strong rebounders from other positions, including Wesley Johnson and Kobe Bryant. Johnson, like Davis, uses his athleticism to outjump players. Bryant has always averaged a decent amount of rebounds from the guard position, despite never getting credit for it. Ronnie Price is probably the team’s most underrated rebounder, and he is unafraid to challenge bigger players to secure defensive rebounds.

Rebounding is an important part of the game, and the Lakers proved that the second chance opportunities can keep them in games against better competition. They need to utilize their strengths to give them a chance win games, especially as they navigate through a tough schedule. There is no reason for the Lakers not to dominate the glass every game.
