Virginia Tech Basketball Needs Momentum

When Buzz Williams was announced as the new head coach at Virginia Tech, some excitement and enthusiasm returned to Hokie nation. Hiring a  coach of Williams’ stature was a coup for a program that averages one NCAA Tournament appearance a decade.

Buzz quickly revamped the roster, running off a handful of players from last year, and bringing in highly regarded prospects that had signed with him at Marquette. No one thought the program would turn around overnight, but there was a sign of light. That flame seems to be extinguishing some after the first month of the season, which culminated in a loss to Radford at home. The Highlanders rarely put up much of a fight, and even this year was suppose to be no different, as they are  one of only a few teams on Virginia’s schedule with less height and front court prowess.

The ACC conference schedule  is just around the bend, and January features games with Syracuse, North CarolinaLouisville, Pittsburgh and Virginia. The Hokies need to win now as they play  cupcakes such as The Citadel, Morgan State and Alabama A & M. The schedule was designed so that the team could gain confidence, win games and regain the student body’s interest in basketball. They are not off to a good start.

This team has some talented young players such as Justin Bibbs, Adam Smith, Devin Wilson and Joey van Zegeren, but none of them have the ability to take over a game the way Erick Green or Malcolm Delaney did. Unfortunately, not all prospects live up to their potential, although it is way too early to judge these kids, but Tech fans are impatient and need something to cling onto or the excitement Williams brought to Blacksburg will be deflated.

Cassell Coliseum can be a fantastic home court advantage when crowded, yet stale and quiet without fan support. No one expects this team  to win eight or nine conference games, four or five is more realistic, but they need to show the effort and passion of their coach or Buzz’s tenure will not be nearly as long as his contract.
