Baylor Bears Prove They Are Never Out of Any Game

The Baylor Bears proved on Saturday that when you have a high-powered offense, you are never out of the game.

Baylor appeared to be finished in the fourth quarter of Saturday’s Big 12 contest against the TCU Horned Frogs. With 11:38 left in the game, TCU had scored on a Marcus Mallet interception return to go ahead 58-37.

But with the offense that the Bears have, they are never out of a game until the final horn sounds. Bryce Petty led his team on four quick scoring drives to close the game and give Baylor an improbable 61-58 win in Waco. Chris Callahan made a 28-yard field goal as time expired to provide the margin of victory.

Baylor’s scoring drives in the fourth quarter lasted a total of 4:32, with the longest one lasting 1:23. That’s a quick-strike offense.

Petty had another big game, connecting on 28-of-55 through the air for 510 yards, with six touchdowns and two interceptions. And his leadership certainly was the calming force in leading Baylor to such a big comeback.

The difference in the second half was the ground game. Baylor went to Shock Linwood time and again in the second half, and the TCU defense could not stop him. Linwood carried 29 times for 178 yards in the game, keeping the Horned Frogs honest and allowing Petty to pick his spots for key passes.

Adding the running game to its already potent passing game will make opponents cringe as they try to game plan for the Bears. The hurry-up attack of head coach Art Briles is enough to keep defensive coordinators up at night. But if they have to worry about the running game as well as the passing game, it might be too much to think about.
