QB Jameis Winston has had a hectic week to say the least, but this Saturday, he got to put his distractions on the back burner for the length of a football game. It is probably nice having something to focus your energies on other than legal issues.
The Florida State quarterback helped his team thrash Syracuse, and it will be interesting to see where his name lands in the Heisman rankings after this latest game. Voters likely will not want to cast their vote in favor of Winston due to his character issues, but his statistics are getting fairly hard to ignore. Voter fatigue will probably set in, though, and it would surprise me to watch him become a two-time winner of college football’s highest individual honor — even if he deserves to win it.
The quarterback appeared to enjoy putting some of the noise behind him on Saturday. Winston had two touchdowns through the air by halftime with a comfortable 24-6 lead, and he was brutally efficient against the Orange, finishing with 317 passing yards on only 36 attempts.
The Seminoles went on to win 38-20, and they were able to score three touchdowns total through the air without having one sack recorded against them. They will undoubtedly remain the No. 1-ranked team in the country and should be the favorites to win it all going into college football’s first-ever playoff system.
The only thing that could upend their title hopes would be if Winston got suspended by the school in his upcoming hearing. That means Seminole fans better hope things go in their favor. If their quarterback gets suspended, then Florida State would quickly become the underdog.
