Enough cannot be said of the job Stanley Jean-Baptiste did playing cornerback this past weekend. He was shoved straight into the spotlight after only being moved from receiver a few short weeks ago.
Though he is no Prince Amukamara or Alfonzo Dennard, he still played well. He, like the other young Huskers, will continue to have some growing pains as they continue to adjust from high school to redshirt to playing time. This is definitely not uncommon, as it takes time to adjust. Focus must be one hundred percent in college on every play, or you will get torched.
Jean-Baptiste has been learning from one of the best in Alfonzo Dennard. It also doesn’t hurt when you have freakish size and speed, which Stanley does. Stadning 6-3, 200 lbs, and who can run a 4.45 40, there are not many receivers who will be able to out muscle or out run him.
His technique has not been great, which is by far no problem, yet. He is going to need to improve, which I no doubt believe he will, as the season progresses, otherwise offenses with better playmakers (Wisconsin) is going to look straight his way, and find a way to exploit him.
Stanley Jean-Baptiste has already shown his potential so far this year. One needs to look no further than his fantastic interception on Joe Bauserman. Though he did get beat by a step off the line, he showed great technique. He ran back and caught up to the receiver, saw he (receiver) was looking up, then Stanley turned his head around, located the football, and reached out and made the pick. It was picture perfect.
In the future, Stanley-Jean Baptiste could develop into the next Prince or Alfonzo, but he will need to continue to put in the hard work and reps. However, I believe Stanley has a bright future at his new position in Nebraska’s secondary.
