The New England Patriots are likely to select either a defensive end or defensive back with their first picks in the 2012 NFL Draft. Everyone knows the top prospects from the major schools that are likely to go in the first round. This slideshow will focus on possible surprising first round selections by the Patriots.

These five players are top 50 players in the draft but are widely considered second round draft picks. These possible surprising prospects are defensive end Vinny Curry (Marshall), cornerback Casey Hayward (Vanderbilt), cornerback Josh Robinson (Central Florida), defensive end Chandler Jones (Syracuse), and defensive end Cam Johnson (Virginia).
