Contrary to what most people believe will happen, New York Giants general manager Jerry Reese is open an Osi Umenyiora contract extension.

Osi has come out and said he wants to remain with the Super Bowl champions, but he also said he wouldn’t be surprised if they trade him. He still wants a new contract, but he promised the team and their fans that he would remain quiet this off season.

He is making that promise after he was portrayed in a negative light during his mini hold out last training camp.

“We got a lot to talk about,” Reese said at the 2012 NFL Combine. “It could happen. Right now we have a lot of issues to look at and got to formulate a good game plan and see if we can get it done. But we don’t know what we can do yet [in terms of the salary cap]. We don’t even know what the cap number is going to be. There is a lot of issues that we have to fix and address. So we will see what will happen.”

There is no doubt the Giants are a better team with Osi rushing the passer. He had 12.5 sacks in 13 games last season (including playoffs), but I wonder how long he would last in a backup role, and are the Giants willing to give him big bucks to be a backup?

That remains to be seen.
