New York Jets Kicker Nick Folk & Punter T.J. Conley Win Starting Jobs
While the competition at the wide receiver position is still heating up, it appears two special teams position battles are over.
According to Jenny Vrentas of the Star-Ledger, the New York Jets have released kicker Nick Novak and punter Chris Bryan, which would seem to indicate that Nick Folk and T.J. Conley have won starting jobs.
Folk will be placekicking in New York for the second straight season. His season highlight last year was his game-winning field goal against the Indianapolis Colts in the first round of the playoffs.
The Jets won that game 17-16, as Folk’s 32-yard field goal sailed through the uprights as time expired.
The Jets brought in Nick Novak to compete with Folk, and the Jets were reportedly impressed how Folk responded when Novak was brought in. He did not take the competition as a slight, but instead as a challenge to get better, and the Jets believe he has.
Australian punter Chris Bryan was signed to compete with T.J. Conley in what was one of the most wide-open position battles in training camp. Neither one of them really stood out, but Conley had an impressive game on Monday.
However, even with Conley the lone punter left in camp, Manish Mehta of the Daily News reports that Conley is not necessarily guaranteed a roster spot long-term.
Conley had been the punter who was cut late in camp each of the past two seasons, losing out on the starting job to the since departed Steve Weatherford.
Now, Conley will have a chance to prove to the Jets that he was the right choice all along. One slip up, and he could find himself on the waiver wire once again.
