As the New York Jets look to fill out the rest of their offensive coaching staff, with each passing day it’s becoming more and more unlikely that Todd Haley will join the Jets.

The former Kansas City Chiefs head coach, who coincidently was fired the day after his team was blown out by Rex Ryan and the Jets back in Week 14, interviewed with the Jets for an undisclosed position recently.

Haley, who got his coaching career started with the Jets in a variety of roles from 1995 to 2000, was thought to be a candidate for a passing game coordinator job, paired with his former colleague, Tony Sparano.

However, sources are saying now that Haley and the Jets were unable to come to an agreement, and it’s unlikely he will end up in New York unless he changes his mind in the next few days.

Haley was 19-26 in 3 seasons as Chiefs head coach, and his biggest coaching success was as Arizona Cardinals offensive coordinator in 2007 & 2008, which culminated in an NFC Championship and a Super Bowl appearance.

The general thought around the league was that Haley would likely choose between the Jets and the Cardinals, one of his two former employers, for his new gig in 2012. But now that’s gotten a little murkier.

Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic is reporting today that a return to the Cardinals now looks unlikely for Haley, who most likely is looking for an offensive coordinator job somewhere around the league.

According to Somers, Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt is very fond of current offensive coordinator Mike Miller, and Whisenhunt does not want to shake up his coaching staff just to make room for Haley.

Haley is a high-energy coach, and it doesn’t appear that the Cardinals are too keen on bringing in the bombastic ex-coordinator back when they feel they have a good thing going, for the most part, on their staff.

So where will Haley end up? If he’s not going to go back to the Cardinals, I guess the door is not completely closed on a reunion with Sparano and the Jets. Otherwise, your guess is as good as mine.

Haley is a good offensive coach, and although he may have been a little over his head as a head coach in Kansas City, I have a feeling he’ll do well wherever he ends up.

I’d like to see him on the Jets’ staff, personally, but we’ll cross that bridge if we come to it. At any rate, I still expect the Jets to hire another offensive coach or two before free agency begins in March. Stay tuned.
