In case you missed part 1 of my chat with NFL Draft Expert Shane P. Hallam, you can find that here.
Here is the second part of my chat with Shane P. Hallam of DraftCountdown.com, in which I asked him about who he believes the New York Jets should target early in the draft, and also about some sleeper picks.
___________________________________________________________________________
Jon Presser: Who should the Jets be targeting with their first two picks? Would they trade down to acquire more draft picks if a couple of guys they’re targeting go off the board early?
Shane P. Hallam: I think finding that top pass rusher would be in the Jets best interest.
Assuming Alabama’s Courtney Upshaw is off the board, I would opt for South Carolina’s Melvin Ingram. He is a straight talker who is a stern and motivating leader. Though he is not the most athletic pass rusher, the positive locker room presence would help the team, as well as his talent.
In the 2nd round, nabbing a dynamic RB like Boise State’s Doug Martin would be a perfect compliment to Shonn Greene and likely pass Joe McKnight and Bilal Powell as the #2 back with LT most likely going by the wayside. Mark Sanchez needs plenty of help, and more of a dynamic runner who can block would be it.
Not sure Tannenbaum is the trading down type, but if offers are there, they should take it. The difference between pick 16 and pick 30 isn’t much in this draft, get value how you can.
Jon Presser: Who do you think will make the biggest impact among the players projected to go in the 3rd/4th round or later? Any sleepers to keep an eye on around the league?
SPH: I could go on for days!
Arizona WR Juron Criner has dealt with some mental issues off the football field, but on it he was who the Arizona offense revolved around. Solid hands, good size. He could take Plaxico Burress’ role down the line and do it better in a few years.
Utah State LB Bobby Wagner had a great Senior Bowl week and he can play the weakside in a 4-3 or ILB in a 3-4. He isn’t big or fast, but he is a football player who can contribute immediately on special teams and be a starter down the line.
Furman CB Ryan Steed is a 3rd round pick who plays physically and is a tough competitor. As a small school player, he not get the respect he deserves, but he has good size, speed, and can press cover with the best corners in this draft.
Finally, a deep sleeper, Temple TE Evan Rodriguez can block and has nice soft hands. He could be a Jake Ballard type player at the next level who can block and make a big catch as needed. Someone to look for in the later rounds.
Many thanks once again to Shane for taking time out of his busy schedule to answer a few of my questions. Is it April yet??
