The calendar has finally turned to April, which means NFL fans are closer and closer to getting their football fix.

The biggest weekend of the NFL offseason is just weeks away, as the 2012 NFL Draft on April 26-28 will be upon us soon enough.

The New York Jets will have a multitude of picks this year, which hasn’t been the case in recent years.

They’re currently penciled in for a total of ten selections in the 2012 NFL Draft, with six of those picks in the final two rounds.

The Jets only had six total selections in 2011, and only four in 2010. They have as many picks in 2012 as they had in the last two years combined.

In fact, since they hired head coach Rex Ryan in 2009, the Jets have only drafted a total of 13 players in three seasons, the fewest in the league.

There’s no doubt that the Jets have holes they need to fill. They need to find depth at safety, outside linebacker, wide receiver and offensive line, just to name a few.

With seven picks on the third and final day of the draft, the Jets’ draft scouts have the opportunity to find some late-round gems.

Fortunately, they have all of their scouts back this year, so general manager Mike Tannenbaum and company really have no excuse not to bring in a good draft haul this year.

The past few seasons, they haven’t drafted many too many players who made an immediate impact, at least compared to many other teams. This year they need to change that.

With the 16th pick overall in the middle of the 1st round, they’ll have their highest draft slot since 2008, back when Eric Mangini was still the coach, in the ill-fated Vernon Gholston draft.

This could be a big make-or-break year for the Jets front office, as they try to assemble a roster that can bounce back strong in 2012 after a disappointing 2011 season.

A good draft can separate the good teams from the mediocre ones, and put solid teams over the top when it’s all said and done.

This month here on Rant Sports, expect wall-to-wall draft coverage as the 32 NFL teams make their final preparations for the 2012 NFL Draft at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.
