New York Mets Not Likely to Make Any Big Changes to the Pitching Staff

It is no secret that the New York Mets’ starting rotation has been very mediocre.  It is also no secret that in order to beat out the Philadelphia Phillies in the short term and the Atlanta Braves in the short and long term, the New York Mets are going to need to significantly upgrade the talent in their starting staff.  Those upgrades won’t be seen at the beginning of 2012 though because Sandy Alderson expects to bring back most of the current rotation.

The current rotation – even with growth from Mike Pelfrey, Dillon Gee and Jon Niese – is nowhere close to competing for a playoff spot.  There really is not much of a choice for Alderson though.  First and foremost, we need to see what happens with the Jose Reyes negotiations.  If Reyes goes elsewhere the Mets might just blow everything up and start from the ground floor.  If that is the case it is obviously not worth spending money on any big name free agent pitchers.  Even if Reyes stays, the need to refrain from pouring additional big money into the free agent market is still only a little less obvious.

I never really expected any big changes to the pitching staff for next season – not the starting rotation at least.  I think the best course of action at this point would be to maintain the level of production that they are currently receiving and continue to develop the young pitchers in the system.  It wouldn’t be a popular option to choose, but trying to fool the fans into thinking that 2012 is anything other than a transition year is only going to make things worse.
